I John 2:17

“And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”

Good riddance cursed world! You are passing away along with all your crippling desires!

Be gone “desires of the flesh”. Be gone “desires of the eyes”. Be gone “pride in possessions” (v. 16). You will all die and bother our souls no more with the passing of this world. But all the pleasures in God you have fought to hinder us from enjoying will finally and fully be consumed at the festivities of your death. The most joyful funeral: the passing of the world and its desires!

Artists, the desires of the world are passing. Let them pass you by. Their sprinter disposition will fail them in the end. A quick pleasure runs short in measure. So it is with any desire that does not culminate in fellowship with God. Lust, Greed, and Pride only know the back-hand of God’s judgment; hardly considered to be fellowship. Don’t follow them. Don’t listen to them. Don’t entertain them for a moment. Keep your sights set on the will of God and you will find yourself, because of Christ, abiding in everlasting life enjoying pleasures forevermore!

Do you have flesh, artist? Of course you do. Rather than listen to it, employ it the will of God. Don’t let it idle for a moment in its lusts. Offer up your bodies as living sacrifices to God, holy and acceptable – this is your spiritual worship. Be the aroma of Christ to God among men by laying down your flesh for the sake of sowing the truth of God. Consider how God has made the frame of your flesh and let it image forth the glory of God, as is its purpose. Therein lies its greatest pleasure.

Do you have eyes, artist? Probably, but you do not need your eyes to see. Focus on what is unseen and you will find faith to obtain all that Greed longs for. Watch the Light reveal the darkness of the world for the muck that it is as He lights aflame its cursory desires.

Do you have possessions, artist? You have some. But they were all given to you. I don’t care how you ended up with them, you will always be a receiver if you are less then God. Naked you came and naked you will return. You have brought nothing into this world and you will take nothing with you wherever you are going. The earth is the Lord’s and all that it contains. It is the grace of God that you have what you have for your little gig on earth. So, how are you spending such entrusted possessions? Do you employ them in doing justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly before God? Is that not His will? Is that not why God has put you in possession of such artistic expression?

Artists, let not your flesh, your eyes, or your possessions spoil you the way the world spoils the pleasures of God. Let what is passing pass. Spend your artistic toil on that which will abide forever.
