John 18:37b

“You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world – to bear witness to the truth…”

This is Christ's answer to Pilate. Christ knows who He is, and Christ knows His purpose for being in the world as a man. Yes, Christ is a king, but a King of a much different kind than what Pilate is comprehending! Christ does not concern Himself with trivial earthly titles. Christ focuses on His purpose for being on the earth, which is this: to bear witness to the truth.

Artists, do you understand what you are if you are a child of God? You are an heir with Christ in His kingdom. “The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us” (Romans 8:16-18).

Do not be afraid to suffer for the truth in your artistry. Pursue the pleasures of faithfulness as Christ did. If you are a child of God, artist, you will have more authority one day than any earthly king or pop star has ever accrued. “…Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? …Do you not know that we are to judge angels” (I Cor. 6:2-3)?

Set your status-climbing gear aside. At best you can only conquer the top rung of a footstool (Isaish 66:1) as you traverse the world's titles. Instead, spend your energies as Christ did on bearing witness to the truth! God has a title for you, that is, for those who are faithful, that no artistic society can award.

Artists, for this purpose you were born: to know, to enjoy, and to bear witness to the truth of God! How are you doing? It is the faithful one who will reign with Christ over all the earth’s title sporting, yet faithless, artistic kings. Don’t be caught with a sash of theirs as the pursuit, the hope, and the final glory of your artistic labors. It will burn with you. Learn from Christ. He knows His title and the weight of its glory. What mere men call Him does not concern Him. Christ sets His energies on being faithful to the purpose for which God sent Him into the world – to bear witness to the beauty, the glory, the power, the might, the mercy, indeed, the pleasure of the full truth of God.

Let the world call you a king if God has granted your lot to bear such a title. All kings point to the truths of superiority and sovereignty by God’s design. But let not the affections of your heart bear an earthly title as its prize, its pursuit, or its hope for righteousness. The truth is that God is the very Archetype of all earthly titles given to men as they bear witness, in measure, to the truth of the reality of the splendor of God.

So artists, be careful not to fall into the ruts of the mind of the world that only thinks in categories of kings, charts, sales, royalties, recognition, status, etc… as the end, the motivation, and the pleasure or purpose for their labors in the arts. You, if you are in Christ, are already far wealthier than they as you are an heir of God. Rather, transform yourself out of the world’s cast by renewing your mind to that of Christ’s. Be faithful in your pleasures in the arts; bear witness to the pleasures of the truths of God!
